First published Tuesday, July 8, 2014 The University awarded a contract for XFe96 and XFp Extracellular Flux analyzer from Sea to Seahorse Bioscience, Inc., North Billerica, MA, for an estimated $162,408. Purchase from Seahorse Bioscience,Inc. two devices, XFe96 analyzer and XFp analyzer are microplate based devices for measuring oxygen consumption rates and extracellular acidification rates simultaneously. The Seahorse XF technology is extremely sensitive and can assess oxygen flux in a very small number of cells. As few as 10,000 cells can be used to measure oxygen and proton changes. Only the Seahorse technology, as evidenced by the U.S. patents can use an 8 well tissue culture microplates (XFp) and 96 well tissue culture microplates(XFe96). The Seahorse XF technology can begin measurements immediately, while other technologies, such as the BD Biosensor plates, require greater than 1.5 hour’s worth of measurements before the first reliable data can be gathered.
