First published Tuesday, July 19, 2016 The University awarded a contract for Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerator to VARIAN MEDICAL SYSTEMS, INC, Palo Alto, CA, for an estimated $3,398,766. Purchase a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator to be able to shift patients between compatible treatment machines. In the case of one machine goes down, almost all previous planning, QA and treatment preparation efforts have to be repeated. Estimated time for each patient will be a total of 6 hours including 2 hours of planning time, 2 hour of QA and secondary check, and 2 hour of treatment preparation. This is not only an impossible task but also not safe. Purchase of a non-matching linear accelerator will put our patients at risk of delays for critical cancer related therapy and possibly inferior outcomes due to missing or delayed treatments. Moreover, the pressure of treating patients in a timely manner not to compromise outcome may put our department and staff in high risk of making errors with possible devastating health and legal consequences.
