USHMM's online Holocaust Encyclopedia (HE) (http://www.ushmm.org/learn/holocaust-encyclopedia) is the most visited content on the Museum's website and the authoritative resource for Holocaust history online. This encyclopedia has been under active development at the Museum for more than twenty years and is an important intellectual asset. Its content will continue to evolve with the Museum's institutional strategic goals. The project's purpose is to ensure that the technology foundation of this project can support the continued growth of this resource.

The software system that holds and manages the many resources included in the HE is obsolete. Available functionality for the content managers and administrators of the system has been steadily declining. A new backend system is needed:
(1) to provide proper care of the digital objects that constitute the HE's data; and
(2) to manage the complex relational metadata -- information about the connections between and among these objects -- that together form the Museum's online narrative of Holocaust history.
