The City of Flagstaff is seeking statements of qualifications (“SOQs”) from artists or artist teams to create a 3D artwork to be installed in the center of the Switzer Canyon roundabout located at the intersection of N. Switzer Canyon Drive and N. Turquoise Drive. The City of Flagstaff, through its Beautification and Public Art Commission (BPAC), advocates for the beautification, arts and sciences in Flagstaff and supports this project. This is an opportunity to contextualize, design, fabricate and install artwork within the project scope. An initial design services contract will be offered to the selected artist. Once City of Flagstaff approvals are met and all design documents created, the selected artist will be offered a second contract for fabrication and installation of the artwork. The selected Artist will work with a design team, including a landscape architect, to create site specific 3D artwork that integrates with the reconfiguration of the hardscape at the center of the roundabout at N. Switzer Canyon Drive/N. Turquoise Drive. Direction for the public art is to successfully contextualized the 3D artwork within a hardscape that accommodates traffic safety signage and sightlines; to create a site specific icon that can be appreciated by drive by traffic through engaging with the community, researching the site location, and artistic inspiration; to create, fabricate and install artwork within the proscribed budgets; and to create a 3D artwork that is durable to the elements, requires minimal maintenance, meets safety requirements, and deters graffiti. Artists must submit a SOQ that clearly demonstrates the Artist’s applicable competence, qualifications and relevant experience with public art.
