The U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC), National Oceanic Atmospheric and Administration (NOAA), and the National Marine Fisheries Service intends to award a Purchase Order to award a Purchase Order to the University of California, Sponsored Programs in Davis, CA to provide stable isotope (δ13C and δ18O) analyses from otolith samples of red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IR-MS). The isotope ratio measurements will be calibrated based on repeated measurements of standard reference material (NBS-19). The objective of this study is to use stable isotope analyses to provide data that can be used to estimate and discriminate nursery origin of red snapper. The specific goals of this study are to: 1) measure δ13C and δ18O from otoliths of juvenile red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus; 2) measure δ13C and δ18O from otolith cores of adult red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus; 3) compare these data to δ13C and δ18O measurements made in previous red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, projects; and 4) use these data in combination with previous stable isotope results to potentially assist with management decisions for this species.
