The Eglin AFB Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) had been treating a patients with chronic intractable pain of the lumbar and thoracic region using an Illumina 3D programming algorithm and MICC (multiple independent current control) offered by Boston Scientific during a trial period. During this period the patient’s pain and suffering significantly decreased to the point of being non-existent. Placement of a permanent implant was required to help fully relieve the patient's pain and restore physical function.

Since this was an unexpected surgery, a mission impact letter for urgent and compelling need for this requirement was submitted by the surgery department. In order to insure arrival of the necessary equipment prior to the scheduled surgery date, Boston Scientific requires a contract in place 3 days prior to surgery. Missing this scheduled surgery would have prolonged the patient’s pain a minimum of 2 months based on availability of the surgery department.
