This requirement is for a SoDAR system to support research performed by the US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station Fire Sciences Lab. Wind is a critical factor in fire behavior and methods for visualizing and simulating wind flow have been limited. Techniques and tools for characterizing wind flow on a spatial basis at heights of more than 20 m above the ground are limited. This SoDAR system will be used to obtain vertical three dimensional wind profiles near field fire experiments up to 200 meters above the ground. This system will provide new capability to monitor and measure how terrain modifies wind flow and how wind impacts fire intensity and growth. The data from this system is critical to development of new understanding about interactions and interdependence of wind and fire in natural environments. It will be used by fire researchers exploring fundamental physics of fire as well as simulating fire growth using advanced fire modeling tools.
