The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) intends to negotiate, on a sole-source basis, with Thermionics Northwest, INC., under the authority of FAR Part 13.106-1(b), for the procurement of two single axis manipulators with synchronous motor and controller to be used by NIST Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML), in Gaithersburg, MD.

***** The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires ultra-high vacuum single axis vacuum translators to set up a scanning probe microscopy (SPM) lab at NIST. This lab will be identical to an existing SPM lab at NIST and will share equipment between the two laboratories. The manipulators must be identical and interchangeable with the existing translators. In the event of a failure, this compatibility will allow the users to use existing spare parts and interchange components to maintain in-vacuum positioning and alignment which is required in critical experiments. Interchangeability requires that motors, motor controllers, and electrical connections be identical. Thermionics is uniquely qualified to meet the compatibility and interchangeability requirements as they are the original equipment manufacturers of the existing equipment currently in use in the SPM lab at NIST.
