First published Friday, May 20, 2016 The University awarded a contract for Rhesus and Cynomolgus macaques. to PrimGem, LLC, San Anita, CA, for an estimated $900,000. PrimGen is the only vendor that can supply animals with defined genetic profiles to provide the most appropriate animals for research studies at UIC. In addition to genetic screening. they provide the microbiological and viral testing assays necessary to screen for disease agents, exclude infected animals from their colony, and ensure only the healthiest nonhuman primates are purchased. This purchase is to coincide with ongoing research grant funding. Numerous research projects utilize animals from this source for long-term on-going studies, although the research volume is unpredictable. This standing purchase order will insure a continual supply of research animals that may be needed to meet the research objectives of the research community. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the items are required for research and no other source is able to meet the researcher's documented needs.
