1. Project Description The Nelson Thompson Slide and Drainage AML Reclamation Project is being impacted by a slide which has blocked the road to the family cemetery, significant erosion due to various drainage issues on the property and erosion from a breached impoundment. The slide and drainage issues were the result of AML eligible mining. The impoundment that breached was constructed as sediment control for AML-eligible coal mining. This project is located on the Blaine Quadrangle near the community of Cherokee in Lawrence County. The Latitude is 3805'13" and the longitude is 8251'49". The 911 address is 566 Lickfork Road, Webbville, KY 41180. The project boundary encompasses 10 acres of which 0.59 acres are access roads. The project will consist of excavation of material for the slide down to rock with a transition zone into natural topography surrounding the slide. The area of the breach of the dam will be regraded to slopes of 2:1 or less, unless cut in rock with the construction of a diversion ditch with 4' bottom width, lined with class III rock through the area of the breach and pool of the old pond. The regraded area will be re-seeded. A permanent type B sump and various diversion ditches and culverts for drainage control will be constructed. The project also includes constructing three (3) core drains to direct drainage from backfill areas into a designed diversion ditch, and installing of various culverts and headwalls as shown on the design drawings. No soils/ spoil will be removed from the site. Any excess material will be retained and redistributed within the project area to cover ruts, rills, gulleys, and areas with rough topography within the project limits. Some trees are present within and adjacent to the old pond on the site and within the slide area and transition areas. Tree disposal for this project is part of site prep. This bid item includes but is not limited to tree chipping, burning, and windrowing. Trees within the area of the old pond site are anticipated to be no larger than 3" DBH. Construction disturbances will be kept to a minimum by the implementation of standard AML Best Management Practices (BMP's) which will prevent significant amounts of sediment related to project construction activities from entering the waters of the commonwealth. Silt will be controlled during all phases of reclamation to minimize silt leaving the reclamation area. Two type B sediment traps and silt fences or straw bales and sumps will be used. After construction has been competed, all disturbed areas will be promptly revegetated using lime, fertilizer, seed, and mulch. While not anticipated, bituminous patching is included as part of this project to resurface any part of the county road damaged by this project.
