First published Friday, April 15, 2016 The University awarded a contract for replacement gilts, boars, and semen to PIC USA, Inc., Hendersonville, TN, for an estimated $210,000. The Department of Animal Sciences-Swine Research Center (SRC) has encountered a significant and continuous increase in disease problems in its pig population over the last several years. The disease level has reached a point where it is negatively affecting the research being conducted there. In order to establish a herd that is free of these persistent problems in has been necessary to depopulate the unit of all pigs. Depopulation and repopulation (depop-repop) is recognized as a successful and reliable industry practice to eradicate disease in swine herds. Depop-Repop is expected to decrease mortality and medication costs and improve average daily gain and feed efficiency with the new pigs. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the items are needed for trial use or testing.
