First published Monday, April 16, 2012 The University intends to award a contract for Prograf (tacrolimus) 0.5mg, 1mg, and 5mg capsules to Astellas Pharma US, Inc., Deerfield, IL, for an estimated $300,000. This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the UI Hospital transplant surgeons request using Prograf specifically for their transplant patient population. Although generic versions of the drug are available, switching between generic tacrolimus products based on availability could lead to wide fluctuations in serum level, which would affect the therapeutic outcome for the patient, organ transplant rejection and/or toxicity.
