First published Tuesday, April 26, 2016 The University awarded a contract for Powerscribe Speech Recognition software to Nuance Communications Inc., Burlington, MA, for an estimated $170,393. Continual Software Support Services for Nuance's Powerscribe Speech Recognition used by Radiology to dictate reports for resulting radiological studies. Nuance developed with collaboration with Hospital IT a customized Radiological process that included a Dragon Speech engine. This speech recognition technology is widely used by staff. Nuance is currently interfaced with both the Cerner Electronic Medical Record as well as the Picture Archiving System (PACs). Radiologists depend on the integration between the PAC's system and Nuance to effectively interpret and record impressions of patient images. Additionally, the PACs system can be accessed directly via an API from Nuance, improving efficiencies of access when utilizing both systems to interpret exam results. Physicians rely on the integration between Nuance and the EMR to quickly retrieve exam results immediately after finalization which improve and quicken the medical decision making process and ultimately the patient care delivery process. For Radiologists, Nuance offers predefined area specific interpretation/dictation templates to assist the Radiologist in capturing necessary data elements in the interpretation of the image. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the procurement is software license, upgrade or maintenance.
