The photomultiplier tube (PMT) shall be sensitive to incident light from 400 nm to 730 nm, with a minimum quantum efficiency of 4% over this this bandwidth. The maximum gain must be at least 106. The active area of the PMT must at least 5 mm in diameter in order to accept a multimode optical fiber. An integrated fiber coupler or adapter is desired, but not required. The PMT must have an operating lifetime of at least 2 years in continuous use. The maximum average anode output current shall be at least 2 µA. It must provide occasional output trains of 50 μA peak current for at least 100 pulses at 1 MHz or slower. The bias network must support such trains without gain droop. The PMT shall operate in ambient temperatures typically from 5 - 35 °C, possibly up to 60°C. The PMT can be packaged as a module with integrated power supply, electronics, active cooling, etc. or as a stand-alone PMT with base socket. However the PMT is packaged, the direct analog output signal from the anode must be available - TTL or other logic pulses are not acceptable. Dark current output must be less than 0.5 nA (typical) and 1 nA (maximum) at the operating temperature, for a gain of 106. The specified dark current may be achieved by providing a cooled housing to a lower the operating temperature below ambient. The PMT's control interface must be suitable for remote operation through a computer, using some combination of analog and digital inputs and outputs. If the PMT is provided as a module with an integrated DC-to-HV converter, the control interface must provide a readback for the HV or an output indicating that this converter is functioning. If the housing is cooled, the control interface must provide a readback of the temperature or an output indicating that the cooler is functioning.
