The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention intends to issue a sole source purchase order to the University of Georgia, 456 East Broad Street, Athens, GA 30601-2431, for pathological and histochemical support of poxvirus research. The CDC poxvirus program is a Poxvirus Reference Center for the World Health Organization tasked with the identification and characterization of known and emerging poxvirus species in order to rapidly identify poxviruses isolated from naturally occurring outbreaks or in the case of malicious intentional release. The work will involve the use of newly developed technologies to produce a microbiologic reference library of IHC and EM characteristics of known and emerging poxviruses.

The CDC pox program will provide the contractor with sample material which will be prepared and used to generate the IHC and EM data, which will then be provided to CDC for storage and analysis. The project will require pre-delivery analyses of the raw images in order to verify the quality of each assay. Period of performance is estimated to be September 2012 through February 2013. Deliverables of IHC and EM data will include up to 100 slides from submitted poxvirus samples (Orthopoxviruses, Parapoxviruses, Yatapoxviruses, and unknown samples), with data of sufficient quality to be used for immediate analysis.

CDC believes that this requirement is met by only University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine Pathology Department, 456 East Broad Street, Athens, GA due to their specialized knowledge of poxvirus virology and microscopy and demonstrated ability to successfully work with known and unknown poxviruses and proficiency with the relevant technologies. This procurement will be processed under the authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1). No solicitation is being issued. Interested persons may use e-mail to identify their interest and capability to respond to this requirement before the expiration date of the advertisement. This procurement is not set-aside for small business. For contractual questions contact Linda M. Young.
