First published Monday, June 29, 2015 The University awarded a contract for Organ transplant registry with UNOS to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), Richmond, VA, for an estimated $1,500,000. University of Illinois Hospital must register with United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)for organ transplant services. UNOS is contracted with Health Resources and Services Administration of the US Department of Health and Human Services to administer the OPTN and there is no other vendor that can provide the same service. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the OPTN is the unified transplant network established by the United States Congress under the National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA) of 1984 to be operated by a private, non-profit organization under federal contract. UNOS was awarded that contract in 1986 and has continued to administer it through contract with Health Resources and Services Administration of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System (UIHHSS) is a member of UNOS in its capacity as an organ transplant center.
