The methods by which the information for numbers 1 and 2 above is obtained involve conducting shipboard and small boat surveys, photo-identification and biopsy sampling. Guam and the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands are areas where the PIFSC has not surveyed for cetaceans. The goal of this research is to collect information on cetacean species occurrence, including locations, group size estimates, photo-identifications, biopsy samples, and behavior during summer-fall surveys in 2011. The surveys in Guam and CNMI will take place around the islands of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.
