First published Tuesday, January 3, 2017 The University awarded a contract for Nanosight NS300 with 488 laser to Malvern Instruments Inc., Westborough, MA, for $128,317.48. Purchase from Malvern Instruments Inc. their Nanosight NS300 with 488 laser and fluorescence/Zetasizer Nano ZS. Only Malvern's instrument and fluorescence/Zetasizer Nano ZS would be able to meet the specifications as only their high resolution can fulfill the research objectives. The Nanosight unit has a patented optical design focuses the diode laser beam for the most efficient scattering in the focal plane and minimize background noise within the sample cell (US patent # 7399600). This patented optical configuration also dramatically reduces noise and therefore provides an improved lower limit of detection compared to other optical techniques for visualizing light scattering. In addition the Nanosight has a detection range of 10nm-2000nm when using the high-sensitivity sCMOS camera, material dependent. This represents a smaller lower detection limit compared to other imaging systems. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the items are required for research and no other source is able to meet the researcher's documented needs. The purpose of the hearing is to receive information from the public in a reasonable manner. Formal rules of evidence will not apply. The hearing officer will produce minutes of the hearing and may record it in order to aid in the production of the minutes.
