This contract is for one new 230 kV single phase spare transformer at McNary Dam. McNary Dam replaced the aging generator step-up (GSU) transformers with new transformers design, manufactured, and tested by ABB between 2004 and 2010. In the event of a failure of one transformer, the estimated time to install an existing spare transformer is 4 months as compared against 24 months to prepare and award a contract and fabricate and deliver a new transformer. A critical spare initiative performed by the Hydroelectric Design Center (HDC) in 2012 indicated McNary Dam was the highest priority project in the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS) to warrant purchase of a spare transformer.
