First published Thursday, August 3, 2017 The University awarded a contract for MiSeq instrument sequencer to Illumina, San Diego, CA, for an estimated $131,759.78. The Illumina MiSeq instrument is a next-generation sequencer that is necessary for the DNASF when conducting so-called "microbiome" studies or other projects in which PCR products are sequenced in high-throughput. Microbiome studies are a centerpiece of the DNASF; we process roughly 20,000 samples per year, making us one of the largest volume microbiome sequencing centers in the US. This type of sequencing requires sequencing instruments that can generate individual sequences that are quite long. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the items are required for research and no other source is able to meet the researcher's documented needs.
