The State Purchasing Officer for this procurement is now Aaron M. Finder. First published Tuesday, June 3, 2014 The University awarded a contract for llumina's Miseq Desktop Sequencer. to Illumina, Inc, San Diego, CA, for an estimated $126,000. Purchase of Illumina's Miseq Desktop Sequencer. Due to the following unique specifications this is the only desktop sequencer that will fulfill the needs of the researcher. Only Illumina's instrument has high throughput or "next generation" sequencing is the only existing approach with the capacity and throughput to identify known, clinically-significant genetic changes in human cancers as well as identify all new, previously undescribed genetic changes in cancer. It is with this overall approach that researchers can move towards the goal of "personalized" or "precision" medicine, where specific genetic features of individuals and their tumors can guide their therapy. The other vendors mentioned,Ion Torrent PGM, Roche 454 GSM do not fulfill the research speciifcations based upon either of the following: Unacceptable error rates in sequencing. Included in this error rate is the difficulty of sequencing homopolymic regions. Introduction of bias for any one sample due to the sample preparation methods used by the alternative supplier. Lack of paired-end capability. The ease of use for both running the sequencing system and generating the sample preparation/library generation, is more challegning for the alternative suppliers. This can lead to unnecessary errors or inaccurate results in the data. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the items are needed for trial use or testing.
