Background Information
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation's foremost federally funded biomedical research institution. It is comprised of twenty-seven Institutes, Centers and Divisions. The Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center is the on-site 267-bed hospital for the NIH campus comprised of clinical, laboratory and administrative staff who support the Institutes as they conduct clinical research working with inpatients and outpatients participating in research studies at the NIH. The Department of Peri-Operative Medicine (DPM) provides surgical services support for patients enrolled in the experimental protocols of several Institutes.
The Department of Peri-Operative Medicine Services provides support for several research protocols that demand these types instruments for several different surgeries.
1EA-LEKSELL MULTIPURPOSE ARC WITH COUNTERSCALE
Leksell Multipurpose Arc with Counter Scale is needed to provide the Neuro surgeons the ability to perform surgeries on patients using the complete Leksell Stereotactic System. Without the purchase of this arc, the surgeons will not have the added ability to perform surgery on the brain or conduct research where utilizing the Leksell Stereotactic System is absolutely crucial.
The Arc provides a surgical approach with ensured accuracy. The x-coordinate is set on both axes before mounting, which assures fast and correct positioning when fitting the arc to the frame. The Leksell Multi Purpose Stereotactic Arc with counter scale is designed to allow the surgeon to select any desired trajectory to the predetermined target, regardless of the patient's position, when using Leksell Coordinate Frame G. Because of the counter scale the accuracy is further ensured when mounting the arc. The unique option to attach several sliding carriers on the arc in combination with the center-of-arc principle allows the surgeon to simultaneously reach and/or observe any selected target through two or more trajectories. This is possible because DPM already has all other components of the Stereotactic system. We only need this Arc to complete the set.
