The laser indirect ophthalmoscope (LIO) headpiece is a laser that when paired with a handheld lens allows for the ophthalmologist to apply laser to peripheral retina. While the current laser setup allows for most treatments, the LIO is necessary for treatment of peripheral retina tears. Retinal tears constitute an urgent ophthalmic condition which should be treated immediately in order to prevent blinding retinal detachments. Unfortunately, most retinal tears occur in the far periphery and often require the LIO in order to treat the tears.
