The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is accepting proposals for the Intercity Bus Assistance Program. This program, in conjunction with FTA 5311 operating assistance and WI Stat. 85.26, allows WisDOT to contract with private providers to improve connectivity to/between major metropolitan areas that currently lack convenient or direct intercity bus service. It also facilitates intermodal connections and creates a more effective statewide public transportation network. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) requires that 15% of WisDOT’s Section 5311 funds be obligated to support intercity bus service unless the Department determines the State’s needs in this area are being met. There is no state funding for this program. Based on long range plans and analysis, WisDOT has identified twelve routes for which it will provide assistance for a portion of providers’ operating deficit using federal funds, based on provider interest, funding availability, and the State of Wisconsin’s best interests.
