The Laboratory of Malaria and Vector Research (LMVR) has a requirement for a Leica SP8 X Confocal Microscope System with 7 Channel White Light Laser Falcon FILM and Lighting System will fulfill the research needs for various projects at the LMVR. The main objective is the lifecycle replacement of a 20-year-old Leica SP5 Confocal Microscope. This new instrument guarantees higher speed collection that is fundamental for living imaging which is fundamental for many of the proposed projects. The scanning unit will run at much higher speed and this will expand the spectrum of user needs that up to now could not be covered with the current outdated instrument. This new instrument will have a better light sensitivity than the existing SP5 confocal microscope, particularly in weak signal samples, which is currently a limiting factor at the LMVR. Importantly, this instrument needs very little excitation power, which is critical to preserve live samples. This new unit will have on board deconvolution software which gives real time deconvolved images saving an immensurable amount of time on post-acquisition processing of images. Also, this system will have increased effective resolution that will reach 120-130 nm. This new instrument has a 690 nm laser which allows the use of probes in the near infra-red spectrum. Leica Microsystems Inc., is the only vendor to provide the SP8 X Confocal Microscope System with 7 Channel White Light Laser Falcon FILM and Lighting System that is compatible with the aging SP5. There will be a trade-in of the SP5 Confocal Microscope, with the components of TMC Air Table, Super Z Galvo Stage and Inserts/Incubation, Specialty Objectives, 2 HyD Detectors and XY Scanning Stage that will be configured to the SP8.
