Small And Any Other Size Business Are Encouraged To Respond
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Jefferson Laboratories, in Jefferson, Arkansas, is conducting market research to support the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER).
CBER research and regulatory scientists routinely use a wide variety of targeted mutant mouse strains in laboratory investigations, many of which are either bred at CBER or ordered from a supplier. The vast majority of mice bearing such targeted mutations have been inbred onto either C57BL/6J (Jackson strain) black mouse or BALB/cByJ (Jackson strain) white mouse genetic backgrounds; that is, they are bred to be genetically identical to the normal mice in all respects except for the targeted mutation of interest. The studies in which these mice are used require considerably larger numbers of "control" normal C57BL/6J and BALB/cByJ wild type mice as points of comparison, with consistent and predictable supplies of the appropriately age and gender matched mice.
Entering into an agreement with predictable dates of delivery of specified numbers of normal mice allows investigators to establish in-house breeding schedules and colony sizes to match normal mice whose availability is ensured. Similarly, entering into an agreement allows the supplier to adjust their normal C57BL/6J and BALB/cByJ breeding colony stock as needed to meet CBER's established, predictable demand. Similarly, many of the rare knockout strains, such as the B6.129S6-Tbx21tm1Glm/J and B6.129S1-Il12btm1Jm/J strains requested here, are only available sporadically and in small numbers, but entering a service agreement request allows the supplier to increase their normal breeding colony stock to meet CBER's demand on a predictable and consistant schedule.
