Padre Island National Seashore operates sixty Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV's) on an average of ten hours per day continuously for four months during the Kemps Ridley sea turtle nesting season. These vehicles require constant repair due to the corrosive environment and bad beach driving conditions. Padre Island is the longest undeveloped barrier island in the United States and is situated off the southeast coast of Texas. The National Seashore encompasses 130,434 acres of barrier habitat, is approximately 70 miles-in-length, and ranges from two to three miles-in-width. The park is bordered on the east by the Gulf of Mexico and is separated from the Texas mainland to the west by the Laguna Madre, a shallow, hyper saline body of water. The Kemp's ridley sea turtle is listed as the most endangered species of sea turtle. It is also the smallest of all species, and it nests mostly during the daytime hours and often on very windy days. The tracks of this species do not remain on the beach very long and it is often challenging to locate the nest where the eggs are located. BACKGROUND INFORMATIONPadre Island National Seashore is located in Southeast Texas. The Park is an environmentally sensitive barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico approximately seventy miles long. It is the longest stretch of primitive, undeveloped ocean beach in the nation and home to endangered sea turtles, various crustaceans, plants, and multitudes of water and island birds. Padre Island National Seashore has operated UTV's since 2007. These vehicles are use to patrol seventy miles of beach operating 10 hours per day. Beach driving conditions are extremely rough on these vehicles and they require constant repair. During the turtle patrol season we strive to keep all vehicles operating. If vehicles fail to operate our Kemp Ridley Sea turtle program would suffer.
