The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Polymeric Materials Group in the Materials and Structural Systems Division is involved with molecular structure testing and imaging of various polymeric materials and coatings. This acquisition supports several projects in NIST's Sustainable Engineered Materials program and is critical for meeting milestones in this program, as well as work with other operating unit's and external collaborations that require chemical imaging.

The FTIR microscope shall be capable of performing FTIR measurements on a variety of sizes of samples, which may be transparent or opaque. The current FTIR microscope in the group is over ten (10) years old and not supported by the instrument manufacturer.
