The FMU-153 A/B Fuze is the United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC)/SOCOM special purpose fuze used in conjunction with 105mm PGU-44/B projectiles. The projectile is fired from a specially mounted 105mm Howitzer in the AC-130 Gunship. The FMU-153 A/B Fuze may be set for either Point Detonating (PD) or Delay (DLY) depending on the type of target. In the PD mode the fuze may be used against soft targets or for registration on hard targets. In the delay mode the fuze may be used against hard targets where target penetration is desired. The FMU-153 A/B Fuze contains a more robust fuze body as compared to typical artillery fuzes to improve hard target penetration.
In addition, the FMU-153 A/B Fuze also contains the following components: Mk 49 Mod 1 Safe and Arm Assembly (S&A), PD Assembly, Mk 25 Stab Detonator, Mk 29 Mod 0 Relay Assembly, Mk 50 Mod 0 Detonator, two Mk 8 Mod 0 Explosive Leads, and CH-6 booster. The Mk 49 Mod 1 S&A is used for in-bore and separation safety. The PD assembly is required for target impact initiation in both modes. On firing, the setback pin located behind the S&A rotor is retracted into the lead block and locked by spin. Rotor detents in the S&A are withdrawn by spin, allowing the rotor to turn to the armed position and lock. Arming is delayed by the gear train. On impact, the rain shield breaks away, the nose partially collapses, and the firing pin initiates the Mk 25 Stab Detonator. Flash from the detonator passes through the flash channel and relay block assembly initiating the Mk 29 Mod 0 Relay Assembly. When set PD, the flash channel is open and the Mk 29 will initiate the Mk 50 Mod 0 Detonator in the S&A. A delay subassembly initiates from the Mk 29 at the same time, serving as a backup should the Mk 29 fail to initiate the S&A. When set delay, the delay pellet burns in 0.005 to 0.11 seconds, initiating the Mk 50 in the S&A rotor. The S&A initiates the first Mk 8 Explosive Lead in the lead block, the second Mk 8 Lead and the CH-6 booster which initiates the projectile.
To be considered a capable source for this effort, all interested parties must submit the requested information as follows:
a) Name of company, address, CAGE code and business size information;
b) A summary that includes a brief description of the contractor's capabilities to include: parent organizations, name/address/point of contact identification/email address, capabilities;
c) Past manufacturing experience with artillery (105mm and 155mm) fuzes within the last 10 years;
d) Provide evidence of proven monthly production at a minimum rate of 5,000 fuzes a month capacity and/or potential capacity;
e) A description of facilities/equipment, manufacturing processes, inspection capability, and personnel;
f) The ability to acquire facilities with sufficient safety clearance to handle, store, and transport energetic materials, components and explosively loaded fuzes; and
g) A general understanding of USG fuze testing requirements including projectiles and ammunition compatibility, and the approval process for Lot Acceptance Testing (LAT).
