A field spectrometer is a portable, hand-held instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The field spectrometer desired is one that is tailored to provide researchers to perform a very wide range of solar spectral reflectance, radiance, and irradiance measurements in the field. The field spectrometer needed in our remote sensing research is one that can measure the entire range of visible and near infrared wavelengths over crops and vegetation. In our research, the information provided by the instrument is used in a variety of applications including crop evapotranspiration modeling, plant water stress monitoring, nutrient management, and plant selection. Additional desired features of the spectrometer are that it is light-weight and rugged, it can be operated as a stand-alone unit with a notebook computer, or with a wireless connection to a PDA, and it provides rapid data collection. Required specifications of the spectrometer are provided on an additional page.
