The Sims Mesa project area includes three treatment units containing young to mature pinyon-juniper woodland and mixed mountain shrubs including Gambel oak, serviceberry and mountain mahogany. There are two treatment units of approximately 51 and 99 acres in one project area and another treatment unit of approximately 150 acres in another project area for a total of 300 treatment acres. In exchange for the service work, three timber harvest units have been designated that include a total of 213 acres. Approximately 4,375 ponderosa pine trees are marked for removal. It is anticipated that the value of the service work will slightly exceed the value of the timber. Roller chopped areas will be seeded concurrently with roller chopping at a rate of 10 pounds per acre. The Forest Service will provide the seed mix. The contractor will provide the roller chopper and broadcast seeder.
