Ultraviolet light technologies are a US FDA approved technology which can be used for decontamination of foods and food contact surfaces. The meat and poultry processing industries are increasingly adopting ultraviolet light technologies for that purpose. Recent advances in the development of excimer lamp systems has made their use more practical. As part of our new 5 year project plan we have proposed validating excimer-based ultraviolet lamp systems for use by the food industry for the purpose of pathogen reduction. This work will be conducted in cooperation with Health Canada as part of an international research collaboration.
