The National Institute on Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and conducts research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of neurological disorders and stroke. The NINDS Cell Biology and Biophysics Section (CBBU) investigates microtubules (MT) in vitro and in vivo at spatial scales ranging from nanometers to micrometers. Lattice incorporation of soluble tubulin leads to the formation of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) islands in the MT lattice that can then regulate microtubule associated-protein (MAP) binding and alter the dynamic instability parameters of microtubules. The CBBU requires an ECLIPSE Ti2-E inverted microscope and components capable of imaging large fields of view to properly image the lattice damage sites.
