This is a requirement for a dual Co2 and Ch4 Carbon Isotope Anlyzer with a Closed System Chamber and 16-Port Manifold for the Department of Geosciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. We request an instrument capable of analysis of 13C from CO2 and CH4 in gaseous samples at near ambient concentration in the troposphere. The instrument must be able to operate in CO2-only mode and CH4-only mode for measurement of ƒÔ13C, in addition to performing simultaneous measurements of ƒÔ13C on CO2 and CH4. The instrument should operate based on the principles of laser absorption spectroscopy, in particular Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy. One key application of this instrument is to determine gas exchange between soil and atmosphere in wetlands, thus having the capability of measuring gases produced in the soil during aerobic respiration (CO2) and anaerobic respiration (CH4) is essential. Another application of this instrument will be in the continuous monitoring of photosynthetic isotope discrimination in mixed stands of evergreen and deciduous gymnosperm trees, thus operating in CO2-only mode is essential as this method provides higher analytical precision than simultaneous measurements of ƒÔ13C on CO2 and CH4. Finally, this instrument will be used in outreach activities directed at high school students, thus having capability to measure ƒÔ13C on CO2 and CH4 will deliver a larger variety of learning experiences for these students.
