ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Crime Scene Investigator is a civilian position within the Detective Division and under the supervision of the Property and Evidence Manager. Photographs and processes crime scenes for latent fingerprints, spent shell casings; footprints and other items of evidence. Photographs and fingerprints deceased persons. Does aerial photography on major crime scenes when required. Makes plaster casts; performs tests as necessary. Attends autopsies as required. Writes reports and provides court testimony as required. Operates photographic, fingerprint lifting and other equipment used in the collection of evidence. Prepares and packages evidence to be sent to criminal laboratories for processing. Transports same as needed. Assists with investigations as assigned by a supervisor. Makes detailed reports on activities. Trains new law enforcement officers on basic crime scene techniques. Issues crime scene kits to officers and detectives. Orders all forensic supplies for the police department and distributes those supplies to department personnel when requested or as needed.
