The NIDDK Biotechnology Core provides bioproduction services within the NIH intramurally and extramurally and works to develop processes that optimize production strategies for the purpose of contributing to the scientific literature. Bioproduction work is done at several scales from the microscale to bioscale-up facility scale (100L). Production on scales ranging from 500 mL to 100L necessitates the use of bioreactors. In order to maintain the capacity of the facility, bioreactors that have reached the end of their useful life must be replaced. The current capacity of the Biotechnology Core is comprised of many different bioreactors of a variety of sizes and styles. In order to maintain them in working order, the services of skilled technicians from the manufacturers are often called upon. Once the manufacturer no longer supports the machines, reliable technicians from outside sources can sometimes be found. At times some machines lose their serviceability due to some combination of a lack of parts
or a lack of qualified technicians. In such cases, new machines must be purchased if the facility is to maintain its research and production capacity. We are currently faced with just such a case. An older B. Braun bioreactor controller base unit that is >30 years old is no longer serviceable and requires replacement. The objective of this acquisition is to acquire a bioreactor base station that is compatible with the bioreactors already in use in the laboratory. The base station currently being used has reached the end of its service life with
specific reference to maintainability and reliability moving forward. This acquisition would serve as a replacement.
