The Laboratory of Dr. Andrew D. Johnson, part of the Population Sciences Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, is involved in the study of blood diseases and genetic associations for measurable blood traits. The lab is particularly focused on the biology of platelet reactivity and population variation and associations with such measures. As part of the research, the lab requires collection of new Platelet RNA-sequencing data in the NHLBI Jackson Heart Study (JHS). The current study is one of the most comprehensive platelet population studies to date. Integrating these platelet function data with platelet transcriptome data will allow the Lab to conduct the largest study to date on platelet transcriptome networks and genes and how they differ among individuals and disease states, and whether they contribute to variation that may influence disease risk or suggest novel therapeutic approaches for better treatment of cardiovascular or bleeding disorders.
