CHAPEL MUSICIAN

CAPODANNO MEMORIAL CHAPEL (CMC)

FT. WADSWORTH, STATEN ISLAND, NY

1.  GENERAL SCOPE OF WORK

The contractor shall provide a musician and a complete music program at Capodanno Memorial Chapel located at Ft. Wadsworth, Staten Island, NY.

2.  ESTIMATED HOURS OF ATTENDANCE

The Chapel Musician will be expected to work an average of 10 hours per week, typically this would include 0800 to 1030 Sunday mornings for Catholic mass and choir rehearsals for approximately 3 ½ hours per week, with the remaining four hours spent in planning and administration and personal rehearsal.  It is understood that the chapel programs demand flexibility so these hours may be modified if mutually agreed upon between the contractor and the chaplain.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A MUSICIAN:

a. Provide piano, keyboard or organ music for all services at Capodanno Memorial Chapel.  Music shall be appropriate and inspirational according to the needs of the cleric in the form of solos, preludes, hymns, praise songs, offertories, choral accompaniment, anthems, and postludes.  Ability to play other instruments is also desirable, but not required for this position.   

b. Regularly scheduled services include:

1) Catholic Mass every Sunday morning.  Chapel musician is expected to be at the chapel from 0800 to 1030.

2) Other traditional Holy Days/holidays.  These shall include Catholic Mass for:

Christmas Eve 1600-1700

Good Friday-1600-1700

Christmas Pageant (date and time TBD for one hour)

c. Provide music for unscheduled services, i.e. memorial and funeral services.  If frequency of these unscheduled services exceeds one every (90) days, the Chapel Musician is entitled to additional compensation at a rate of $100.00 per unscheduled service.

d. Advise Command Chaplain as to timely maintenance of chapel instruments and supplies needed.  Budgets are set annually according to the fiscal year and executed according to a quarterly schedule.  Annual requirements for funding should be submitted to the Chaplain’s office no later than August. 

e. Supervise chapel music library, organizing and filing of all chapel music.  This would also include disposing of old unusable music and recommending purchase of new music.  Disposal and purchase of music shall be done in coordination with Priest and subject to approval of the Command Chaplain.  Areas should be neat, tidy and organized. 

f. Perform all services to direct chapel choirs to include both adult and children’s choirs.

g. Chapel choirs shall include, but are not limited to an adult choir for the Catholic congregation.  If the chapel musician would like to convene children’s choirs for special occasions, this is heartily encouraged.

h. Frequency and content of choir performances shall be arranged by the Chapel Musician with input from Priest.

i. The chapel musician is expected to be available for choir rehearsals for approximately 3 ½ hours on day and time to be determined on a weekly schedule.  Normally the Catholic choir will rehearse one hour.  The remainder of the rehearsal evening is then available for individual work with soloists, other musicians, or special occasion children’s choirs.

4.  SELECTION, PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF MUSIC:

Contractor should prepare music in accordance and alignment with the residing clergy

5.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Deportment:

a. The Chapel Musician should present a neat and clean appearance and wear clothing that presents a professional image for a worship service.

b. The Chapel Musician should have a cheerful attitude and interact well with people.

c. The Chapel Musician should understand that the Chapel is used by various faith groups.  This may require extra time setting up for service due to it being used by others during the week.  Each faith group is responsible for setting up their own service.  Storage facilities for religious items are provided in the Chapel. 

Experience:

a. At least (1) year experience in providing organ and piano music in churches/chapels and experience directing a church choir within the past (5) years.  A letter of recommendation from a Church, Parish or clergy member is required at time of quote submission.
