BALDY MOUNTAIN MASTICATION PROJECT 2013

SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this project is to reduce fuel depths by shredding and mulching existing downed fuels, old stumps, leaning trees, slash piles, and standing dead trees up to 12 inches DBH on the Bald Mountain Ski Area (a.k.a. Sun Valley Ski Resort). A tracked style vehicle such as a self - leveling Timbco or an Excavator with a mastication head attachment is needed to be able to handle steep slopes that range from 35% to 65%. The end result will change the structure of the fuels that will reduce wildfire hazard, increase safe glade skiing opportunities and improve overall stand health.
The work involves masticating two stands known as stand 80 and 114 totaling 24 acres
LOCATION
The project is located on the Sawtooth National Forest, Ketchum Ranger District, on the Bald Mountain Ski Area near Ketchum, Idaho. The legal description is: T4N, R17E, Sec. 23. To access the project site, travel approximately 3.0 miles south of Ketchum, Idaho via State Highway 75 and turn right on Hospital Drive at the traffic light. Travel approximately ¼ mile and turn left at an unsigned road (Cold Springs Drainage) and travel to a green gate (approximately ½ mile). Go thru the gate and through Sun Valley Company's work yard. Take the right fork and start climbing on the Cold Springs work access road approximately 3 miles to stand 114 (See Map).
