Sources Sought for study to increase the sample size available for estimating the abundance of Hawaiian false killer whales, and other small odontocetes as well as examining inter-island movements and stock structure with field efforts off the inlands of Kauai and Ni'ihau. Background: The Hawaiian stock of false killer whales is currently considered strategic under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, as takes in the Hawaiian long-line fishery exceed the calculated Potential Biological Removal level. Two population estimates currently exist from Hawaiian waters, one for the entire EEZ (268 individuals with a CV of 1.08), and one for the waters around the main Hawaiian (121 individuals with a CV of 0.47). Efforts are currently underway to estimate population size and examine stock structure (e.g., inter-island movements) around the main Hawaiian Islands, using mark-recapture analyses of individuals photographically identified from 2000 through 2004. As false killer whales are infrequently encountered, sample sizes for existing mark-recapture analyses are small, and individuals have not been photographically identified off all of the main Hawaiian Islands (animals have been primarily photographed off Oahu and east to Hawaii).
