The scheduled public hearing for 1/2/13 was cancelled. First published Tuesday, December 18, 2012 The University awarded a contract for Avance III HD™ 500 Digital NMR System to Bruker BioSpin Corporation, Billerica, MA, for an estimated $511,550. The Department of Chemistry has made a significant investment with Bruker BioSpin Nuclear Magnetic Resonance equipment. University of Illinois (all campuses) has research experimental schemes that involve seven different Bruker NMR Spectrometers. These experimental schemes and hardware components are not transferable to a different system and the experimental results are shared. The Bruker Avance III NMR is compatible with these systems, and it has unique features that are required for the research needs of the Chemistry Department. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the compatibility of equipment, accessories, replacement parts, or service is a paramount consideration. Bruker Biospin is the only company that can provide an NMR system based upon specifications that is fully compatible with existing NMR systems in the Chemistry Department and the Center for Structural Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).Purchase of an NMR system from another vendor would have (1) software incompatible with the library of 30 advanced NMR pulse sequence experiments in the Chemistry Department and would require one post-doctoral fellow one year to reprogram and test pulse sequence experiments at a cost of $50,000; and (2) hardware incompatible with existing systems such that additional NMR probes ($40,000), amplifiers ($25,000) and receivers ($2,000) will not need to be purchased. The compatibility of the Bruker NMR system will save over $100,000 over a NMR system priced identically from another manufacturer, and the Bruker NMR system has unique features vital to the research needs of the Chemistry Department.
