The City of Santa Barbara Community Development Department, Planning Division is requesting proposals from firms or individuals with the experience and skillset necessary to prepare a Historic Context Statement that provides a holistic history of the African American/Black community in Santa Barbara and identifies possible historic resources that represent that history. This project is funded by a grant from the California Office of Historic Preservation with up to $40,000 budgeted for consultant services that include subcontracting with a local community/research liaison(s) (not a voluntary position). The worldwide reputation of Santa Barbara as a historic city is well known, however, there is a lack of recognition and understanding about the history and contributions of the African American/Black community to the City and wider population as whole. As a Certified Local Government and a designated Preserve America Community by the White House, it is critical to expand our historic preservation program to identify the historic resources important to the African American/Black community in order to guide future recognition of historic places representing the African American/Black community. This project relates to the California Historic Preservation Plan as it will document the social history of one of California’s diverse cultures and historic fabrics that has been significant to the development of California.
