NAVAIR intends to contract on a sole source basis with Tifco Gage and Gear of Livonia, MI for Navy Ryder Gears which will be used to analyze load carrying (anti-wear) characteristics of aviation turbine engine oils and helicopter gearbox oils located at the Naval Air Warfare Center – Aircraft Division (NAWC-AD’s) Fuels and Lubricants Division. Purchase from Tifco is required to assure the continuity of test results, and the continued functioning of the fuels test program. Additionally, the small market for these gears, coupled with the time required to initiate and validate a manufacturing process with a new contractor would have a significant negative impact on the Government's ability to provide and maintain a supply of quality oils to the fleet.
