Title: TITLE: PREVENTION OF SHIV TRANSMISSION BY ANTIRETROVIRAL PROPHYLAX In the absence of an effective vaccine, HIV continues to spread globally emphasizing the need for novel strategies to limit its transmission. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with antiretroviral drugs has been demonstrated to be effective in nonhuman primate (NHP) models of HIV infection. Studies have mainly focused on single-drug PrEP with tenofovir (TFV) and have shown the prophylactic efficacy of this drug following high-dose virus inoculation by different routes (oral, intrarectal and intravaginal). More recent work with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), the currently approved oral prodrug, showed that PrEP with TDF at dosing comparable to the human dose was also partially protective against rectal or oral SIV/SHIV transmission. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for HIV, Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention intends to award a sole source contract under Simplified Acquisition procedures to Alpha Genesis, Inc., Yemasee, SC 29945, the only source that can provide 12 STLV and SRV-free rhesus macaques housed in complex social and physical environments that can be available within one month. Macaques must be 4 years of age or older and weigh 5 kg or greater. Macaques must be shipped to CDC, Atlanta, GA 30333. The period of performance is 12 months from date of award. This is not a request for competitive proposals and no solicitation is available.
