LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS A LICENSEE TO COMMERCIALIZE NEW SHAPE MEMORY POLYMERS (SMP) FOR INDUSTRIAL AND MEDICAL APPLICATIONS
Announcement: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), wants to license new shape memory polymers (SMP) having material properties that exceed those of current SMPâs.
· LLNLâs new Shape Memory Polymers compositions have mechanical properties that bridge the gap between Shape Memory Alloys and the current crop of SMPâs.
SMPâs belong to a category of products known as smart or intelligent materials that have the ability to change size and shape in response to changes in temperature, moisture, pH, or electric and magnetic fields. For SMPâs it is temperature. Using a temperature-dependent process, these polymers can be formed into any shape, reformed into a stable secondary shape, and when stimulated regain the previous âmemoryâ shape to achieve its function. These materials have variable structure or composition depending on the application.
Although the market is dominated by shape memory alloys (SMAâs), LLNL has developed new SMP compositions having mechanical properties that bridge the gap between SMAâs and the current crop of SMPâs. Specifically, these new polymers have higher recoverable stresses than existing commercial SMPâs, have superior clarity for optical applications, and still have larger recoverable strains than SMAâs to build devices with highly complex shapes. These new SMPâs can also be made biodegradable.
Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's New Shaped Memory Polymer (SMP) technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following:
1. Company Name and address.
2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact.
3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology.
Written responses should be directed to:
