First published Friday, June 10, 2016 The University awarded a contract for a genome sequencing system to Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA, for an estimated $732,254.04. The Illumina HiSeq 4000 Sequencing System is critical for research conducted by the Biotechnology Center. It is an integrated platform that uses massively parallel sequencing technology for sequencing of the genome and the study of gene function. It enables sequencing two independently operated flowcells, each yielding over 6 billion fragments of DNA from one or both ends in four days. It allows researchers to identify genetic mutations associated to diseases, sequence bacterial genomes quickly and cheaply, determine gene expression in animals, plants and bacteria, compare how DNA and RNA react under different treatments, and allows the identification of genetic markers associated to productive traits in individual subjects. This will allow the Biotechnology Center to support bio-medical, biological, and agricultural research at the University of Illinois for users both within and outside the university. We need another machine with higher sequencing capacity due to the tremendously increasing backlog of research submissions/contracts. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the compatibility of equipment, accessories, replacement parts, or service is a paramount consideration.
