TITANIUM SLURRY
Primary/Facecoat Slurry:
- The Contractor will provide a primary/facecoat system for use in Investment Casting shells for cast titanium. This primary/facecoat will be the first layer applied to the wax pattern and therefore, be immediately contacting the cast titanium.
- The recommended primary/facecoat will be a commercially proven system that is compatible with the casting of titanium alloys.
- The recommended primary/facecoat will be a non-Ethyl Silicate blend which does not require special ventilation or additional flame supression.
- The primary/facecoat system will be ammonia FREE.
- The recommended primary/facecoat must be formulated to minimize alpha case to levels which are typical for the titanium commercial industry.
- Cost must be a factor in selecting the recommended primary/facecoat since the majority of the titanium applications to be produced at RIA-JMTC will be non-aerospace lower cost components.
- Currently RIA-JMTC uses The Kindt-Collins wax system so the recommended titanium primary/facecoat must be compatible with the existing The Kindt-Collins wax system. If that is not possible the Contractor shall recommend several commercially available wax compositions that are compatible with the recommended primary/facecoat.
- The Contractor will provide all ingredients and the recipe to produce a primary/facecoat slurry including but not limited to:
o Flour
o Binder
o Wetting agent
o Anti-foam
o Anti-bacteria
- The Contractor will provide work instructions for blending and soak time for the primary/facecoat slurry and additives.
- The Contractor will provide all limits for quality on the primary/facecoat slurry along with guidelines on how to keep the slurry viable.
- The Contractor will also recommend test equipment for doing the quality checks.
- The Contractor will also provide an estimate as to slurry pot life for cost estimating purposes
Secondary/Intermediate Slurry and/or Final/Backup Slurry:
Please provide option 1 ,2 or 3-
- 1. RIA-JMTC currently uses a final/backup slurry system for their aluminum and steel casting investment molds which is Colloidal Silica. The preference would be that the primary/facecoat system is compatible with our existing backup system such that RIA-JMTC can use one final/backup system for all of its investment cast products.
- 2. IF the primary/ facecoat shell layers used for titanium casting will be incompatible with the existing RIA-JMTC secondary/ final slurry, then the Contractor will provide a secondary/intermediate system for use in Investment Casting shells. This secondary/intermediate will adhere to both the primary/facecoat slurry and the current backup slurry coats providing the needed barrier between the primary and final coats.
- 3. IF the primary/ facecoat shell layers used for titanium casting will be incompatible with the existing RIA-JMTC secondary/ final slurry, then the Contractor will provide a secondary/final system for use in Investment Casting shells eliminating a 3rd slurry.
- The recommended final/backup slurry system or secondary/intermediate system will be a commercially proven system that is compatible with the casting of titanium alloys.
- The recommended final/backup slurry system or secondary/intermediate will be ammonia free and require no special ventilation.
- The Contractor will provide all ingredients, and the recipe to produce a secondary/intermediate slurry including but not limited to:
o Flour
o Binder
o Wetting agent
o Anti-foam
o Anti-bacteria
- The Contractor will provide work instructions for blending and soak time for the secondary slurry and additives.
- The Contractor will provide all limits for quality on the secondary slurry along with guidelines on how to keep the slurry viable.
- The Contractor will also recommend test equipment for doing the quality checks.
- The Contractor will also provide an estimate as to slurry pot life for cost estimating purposes.
