The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plans to award a purchase order to Applied Scientific Instrumentation, Incorporated to procure a video imaging system. The FHWA is going to evaluate this equipment in their mobile asphalt technology laboratory for use as a rapid field test for aggregates. Washington State University (WSU) research team created the conceptual design of the components and automation software in collaboration with Applied Scientific Instrumentation (ASI). The system software is specific equipment supplied to ASI. The image and data analysis system is unique in its approach to qualifying aggregate particle shape, texture and size distribution. Because ASI assembles the hardware components and the research team integrates the control, image, data collection, and analysis software to the equipment. No other known source is capable of evaluating aggregate particle shape, angularity, and texture and size distribution in one automated system. This is a Simplified Acquisition and the award date is on or about September 10, 2002.
