The acquisition of the Olympus BX53 Microscope is required to fulfill existing needs of the Research and Development Department of VAMC Charleston, South Carolina. The uniqueness of this system is that it is designed as a modular system allowing for the addition of many peripherals and applications to meet varying job requirements. Additionally, it offers some user upgrades that make it easy and comfortable to use; the government can add on to this scope should further studies require additional utilities. The light intensity dial and fluorescence illuminator shutter can also be operated from either side of the unit. As with other Olympus microscopes, the binocular tube tilts as much as 27 degrees, extends 55mm, and lists as much as 45mm for comfortable viewing. The scope also has a sensor that turns off the light source when the user is not seated at the instrument for a length of time; that will conserve the life time of the bulb as well as conserving energy use. This scope is ideally and uniquely suited for the needs of the research and development department.
