This notice is hereby modified to add the following information:The NIST Intelligent Systems Division (ISD) is currently working on autonomous on-road driving research. An infra-red camera is needed due to its capability to detect the heat signatures of people. This is important for pedestrian detection but can also be used to locate injured people in the urban search and rescue scenarios studied by other projects in ISD. These applications are mostly carried out outdoors, which puts constraints on the sensor to be selected. NIST also requires the capability to be able to detect people indoors to provide warnings for the work performed in industrial autonomous vehicles. Thus, a FLIR camera is required for both indoor and outdoor applications. The minimum specifications for the FLIR sensor are as follows:
Firewire output (IEEE 1394) with Linux driver and program (open source): this is very important for integrating with our real-time Linux system.
Sensor Size greater than or equal to 320 by 240 pixels.
Resolution greater than or equal to 16 bits per pixel.
Interchangeable lenses: Some applications require different lenses to accommodate different fields of view.
Frame Rate: 30-60 Hz.
Weight: less than or equal to 3.5lb: Low weight is important because we will be mounting the sensor on small as well as large robots.
Spectral Range: at least 7.5-13 um: Important for indoor and outdoor applications.
The infrared camera shall be a microbolometer and shall not require cryogenic cooling.
